Student Prize winners VMMC

Yann Beuzit and Vincent Lecler from France

We graduated in February 2020 from the National School of Architecture of Normandy in France. We have taken two different courses, one based on refurbishment, and the another one - based on methodology and theory for architectural projects. Our association allows us to share our different skills in order to design asingular architecture.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company / individuals have been involved?

During our studies we were involved with diferent types and scales of projects, from individual housing to sports complex and arts campus. Knowing that 60% of the worldwide population lives in coastal areas, we oriented our architectural reflection to address these problems. Our latest project dealt with urban scale, and that’s why we wanted to work on small-scale architecture with this contest.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture designs living spaces. In our opinion, it’s not only about design, it is based on feelings, atmosphere, light, and materials. For us, architecture should be a living experience, and that’s the architect’s responsibility. We think that nowadays architects have a duty to rethink the techniques in order to include ecological issues in their design.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Architecture competitions are a way to express our creativity and let our imagination run free. These competitions allow us to develop our architectural design skills and project representation. Furthermore, these are an endless source of inspiration which enable us to begin our professional career. In a very competitive architectural world, this is also a way to have more visibility.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Architecture competitions have a lot of benefits, that’s why you should take the leap. It is the best way to improve your skills and explore sites and programs that you may never have imagined.
