Studio BIS is a Budapest-based architecture and interior design office, founded in 2018 - after several years of shared work - by Julia Losonczi and András Gyökér. The practice is built around the value of architectural meaning and a desire to seek beauty, in all its simplicity.

We like the complexity, the diversity and the interdisciplinarity of architectural work. We believe that different scales give us different challenges and we would like to keep our mind open for all kinds of architectural problems. For that reason, we have been dealing with projects of various scales and we would like to carry on this work method in the future.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is the possibility to give a new value to a place, it has the power to change our way of living and – hopefully – our way of seeing things. On the other hand, to be able to face the new challenges of our changing lives, architectural thinking itself needs constant adjustment. We try to keep up with this exciting movement.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

These competitions help us to practice and – most importantly – to develop our conceptual thinking, to explore our architecture’s boundaries. They allow us to follow freely our creativity and to find inspiration. They are also good opportunities to test the strength and the efficiency of our team.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

We believe that these competitions are essential for an architect’s professional growth. They give us a chance to challenge ourselves and to live an instructive and inspiring design experience.
