Kajetan Witkowski and Tomasz Żygo from Poland
We are friends from the same class at Gdańsk University of Technology where we are currently pursuing our Masters degrees in Architecture.
Last year we took part in a regional student competition for the concept design of the new congress center located on the historical Biskupia Hill in Gdańsk, Poland. Our entry was awarded. The aim of our project was to shape architecture as an integral part of the foreseen park within a historical area with monumental buildings and preserved fortification.
We are living in the era when our planet is being transformed mainly by one significant factor: humanity. Therefore, not only should we feel responsible but also excited about our influence and opportunity to change the environment around us. Architecture should be a never-ending experiment resulting in the creation of space that is capable of improving current life and inspiring a future one. The main role of an architect is to manage and maintain this process in that manner.
We see vision competitions as the best way to question the status quo of architecture. It is a great opportunity to criticize its weaknesses, turn up the volume on its threats and freely express our own perceiving of possible improvement. With this approach we always develop ourselves as well.
There is nothing to lose really. There is a lot to learn. The only thing you need to find from the very beginning is a clear vision of what you want to express with your design. If you have it, you are a winner.
