We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the winner of one of our Honorable mentions for the “SKYHIVE Skyscraper Challenge” competition - Bastiaan Muilwijk and Paul Ouwerkerk from Netherlands!

Bastiaan Muilwijk and Paul Ouwerkerk from Netherlands

We are a ‘meeting-of-the-minds’ collaboration, consisting of two independent entities, based in Amsterdam. Bas Muilwijk is an independent architect (MSc Architecture) alumni of TU Delft. Paul Ouwerkerk is a visual artist and designer with a Master’s degree in fine arts from Jan van Eyck Academy.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where company/ individuals have been involved?

Bas Muilwijk is involved in projects ranging in scale form products to urbanism, specialised in architecture and interior design with a focus on climate. Paul Ouwerkerk is creating and applying artworks that investigate a spatial and structural language within the realm of geometry.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is a means to create comfortable space with natural elements; sun, wind and water, as well as other influences, unique to the specific condition. The future demand will be to optimize the relation between architectural design and climate conditions. The architect is the designer of spatial conditions that intend societal enhancement.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

To test the aforementioned principle.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

You should never avoid an opportunity to test your ideas and share the results.
