Design affordable housing solutions for Australia’s fastest-growing city
We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the 2nd prize winner of our “SKYHIVE 2020 Skyscraper Challenge” competition - David Ling from Canada!
David Ling from Canada
I’ve just graduated from the MArch I program at the Harvard GSD this spring. Previously, I attended the University of Toronto where I studied Architectural Design, Psychology & Sociology. Looking forward, I hope to begin my career working with an architecture firm in New York City.
During my education, I gravitated towards projects that questioned the nature of dwelling. Whether a house for two, or a high-rise for two hundred, the dwelling offers a chance to think about design at the full range of scales. I enjoy these kinds of projects because of the intimacy the users will ultimately have with the architecture and the memories it will be a part of.
For me, architecture is about both beauty and good design. I think the most successful projects have both, and the architect’s role is to find a way to make that happen.
Vision competitions are thought experiments for designers. They’re great prompts to hone your skills, define ideas and collaborate with friends. The exposure they offer is also an attractive benefit.
Vision competitions are low-stakes opportunities to explore your ideas and develop your attitude towards design. Just working through a project will make you a better designer. To me, the personal growth is reason enough to participate.
