ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION RED SQUARE TOLERANCE 1ST PRIZE WINNERS!

|
We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the 1st prize winners of our "Red Square Tolerance " competition: Hyung Seok Yoon from Denmark!

I am a Denmark-based architect. I received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University in Korea and Master of Architecture from Aalborg University in Denmark. I worked in architectural firms both in Korea and Denmark. Now I am working as a freelancer architect.

In Korean architectural firm, I worked in a design team for the competition about public facilities like schools and libraries. During the military service as an officer, I designed and managed military’s buildings. One of the most interesting projects I had was a kindergarten project in Abu-Dhabi while I was working in CEBRA. Normally I focus on finding and redefining the existing relationship of space. I also prefer the parametric design with integration of constructions and aesthetics.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of architect in your society?

One’s existence can be recognized only by the others. In this sense, architecture should be understood by people why architects design like this. The buildings always are in our space, so they should give people the sense to feel and enjoy them. If people can’t enjoy this sense, it is difficult to say that they are good architecture. I think architects should focus on people, instead of focusing on their personal preference.

My definition of architecture is that finding a new relationship from existing space and reinterpreting it. This is one of the good ways to make people understand the building and to integrate easily with the present context in the city. I would like to define and improve this architectural method, and is why I participated in this competition.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

I don’t think I’m still good enough to give someone an advice, but I would like to say that “Enter a competition without any hesitation.” I believe a competition is an efficient way of communication with the world if someone wants to talk about their idea. The architectural idea can’t be improved without communication, so it will be better to show their idea in the competition to make the idea better for becoming good architects.
