Brendan Cooney, Parto Jahangiri, Minh Quang Do and Arvin Nadimi from Sweden

Together we are four Master’s students studying architecture at Lund University in southern Sweden. As this was our first time collaborating together as a design team we sought to draw strength from our diverse backgrounds and wide range of previous experience.

Brendan is originally from New York where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in architecture. He now lives in Sweden where he has been working professionally as an Architect.

Parto earned her Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Tehran. The scope of her professional experience consists of various scales, ranging from the urban scale to product design.

Arvin is originally from Stockholm Sweden and moved to Lund in 2015 where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and continues to study.

Before pursuing his Master’s studies in Sweden, Minh earned his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at the National University of Civil Engineering in Vietnam where he has also worked professionally as an architect.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Nowadays, in order to meet new challenges, architects need to take various aspects into account. Throughout the design process, having the ability to visualize a project across the spectrum between the micro and macro is vital. As society is an inseparable part of architecture, so is the individual.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Vision competitions provide a platform that allows total exploration of ideas and concepts that at the very least provide further elaboration on the ever-evolving definition of what architecture is, and how its meaning may be interpreted and implemented in both the near and far futures.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

The answer is always yes. Competitions provide an outlet to fully explore and push further individual creativity, not only through testing design concepts but also by how one expresses these ideas through visual and nonverbal communication, an increasingly important skill as there will always remain a constant demand for innovative and refreshing forms of expression when it comes communicating architecture.
