Architecture competition "European Velo Stops" Green award winners - Tsz Wing Wu and Wesley Fung

We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the winners of the Green prize of our “European Velo Stops” competition - Tsz Wing Wu and Wesley Fung from Hong Kong!

Green award winners from Hong Kong

We are two young architectural designers from Hong Kong. Wing is now studying for a Master’s of architecture degree in CUHK. She has worked for EDArch as an Part I - Architectural Assistant for two years.

Wesley, who graduated from Curtin University in 2017, has worked for QUAD as an architectural graduate for more than a year. Sharing similar background and hobbies, we started to participate competitions and work on projects together in 2016 so that we can absorb as much as we can as an ameteur. From museums, hostels to residential projects, we explored every possibility of our design and developed our own style of work.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where company / individuals have been involved?

We have a very wide-range of experience from large scale master layout planning projects to small-scale interior designing projects during our studies and work. Wing has participated in a kindergarten project from schematic design, presentation drawings, to practical architecture and tender drawings. Wesley has participated in various master plannings from conceptual design to schematic design stage.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Louis Kahn once said, architecture is the thoughtful making of space. Being a thoughtful, human-oriented architectural designer is the biggest goal of our lives. In Hong Kong, architecture is related so much to its selling price. We believed architecture should be self-explained and provide the maximum usage of space for users for them to enjoy. A change is needed.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

We would like explore and enrich our experience among different types of projects and test our efficiency within a limited of time. And we discovered, the sky is our limit.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Don’t hesitate. It is a good chance to try out what we have, and practice your skills. Even though there are no rewards, we gained experience thinking and working with teammates. And by the suitable time, hard work would pay off.
