With nearly 11 million people living in prisons around the world, the impact these institutions have on societies is significant. For the Prisons Redesigned! architecture competition, Bee Breeders is tasking participants with rethinking correctional facilities in a way that will allow them to have a positive rather than negative impact on societies.
The jury is looking for projects that are rooted in a genuine understanding of the impact architecture and design can have on mental well-being. It’s a chance for creative thinkers to use architecture to totally change the focus of incarceration and shift its purpose towards rehabilitation instead.
This is a two-part challenge, with one competition setting the goal of designing a fully functional correctional facility that could theoretically house 600 prisoners. The second competition is an essay competition on “The Architecture of Prisons”. Participants can enter either or both of the competitions.
The "Prisons Redesigned!" challenge is open until November 5, with a total prize fund of 6,000 €. For more information, visit prisonsredesigned.beebreeders.com.
