Hasan Murad Adalı, Burak Çıkırıkçı, Mine Aydemir and Buse Öztürk from Turkey

We are a group of young architects who met each other in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul. While we all have our own individual professional careers in different firms - and half of us (Murad and Burak) are continuing our education at the master’s level, we shaped this competition initiative which has not been named yet. In fact, Adelaide Creative Community Hub is the first project we’ve ever collaborated on.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of AN architect in your society?

Architecture means a projective link between the world of phenomenon and the inevitable instinct of shaping that world to us. It contains a cumulative knowledge and the practise of this relation.

Today, the architect’s role is hard to define in a rapidly-changing reality of the world where everything seems to get more complex. As a professional, the architect can become a part of multiple - segmented networks of business, but he/she is not a decision-maker anymore, at least on a wider scale if we consider the situation in terms of political/financial trends in our society. Still, architecture continues to offer new possibilities and approaches to reveal better forms of living.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

We consider architecture vision competitions as a tool to express ourselves in a unique way, because the format allows us to reach beyond what we see. These competitions not only give us a route to explore our creative potentials but they’re also a getaway to a more exciting field of understanding.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Just decide, it’s the most important part, don’t hesitate if you feel prepared. Decide on what really catches you, and clear your mind for a pure idea, the rest of the process will follow. Regardless of the results, it’s the process itself that gives you the real motivation to do more.
