Architecture competition "Adelaide Creative Community Hub" 3rd prize winners - Kathrine Vand, Emil Trabjerg Jensen and Sebastian Appel

We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the winners of the 3rd prize of our “Adelaide Creative Community Hub” competition - Kathrine Vand, Emil Trabjerg Jensen and Sebastian Appel from Denmark!

3rd prize winners from Denmark

Kathrine and Emil have both finished a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering, with specialization in architecture, last year from Aalborg University in Denmark. Sebastian is self taught in 3d and has an education in Web Integration from 3D College Denmark. Today, Emil is doing his Master’s in Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, while Kathrine is working at Utzon Center in Aalborg before she starts her Master’s in Architecture at University of Tasmania in Australia. Finally, Sebastian is a Senior Artist specialized in interior/exterior visualization and Roomscale-VR at Cadesign Form in Denmark. Kathrine and Sebastian have known each other since high school and Emil has been a part of their group of friends for the last four years.

"We have always known that we had a common interest in design, but this is the first project in which we teamed up as professionals and participated in a vision competition. We have never participated in a competition together before."

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of the architect in your society?

Architecture is a big part of our life. As friends we discuss it no matter where we are or what we see, and often go to talks and lectures to gain more knowledge. Denmark has a long and strong tradition when it comes to architecture and design. It is known as “architecture to- and for people” which is what we always try to achieve in our designs.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

We participated in this competition thanks to the openness of the brief and our common interest in the theme: creativity. It gave us the opportunity to test the tools we have learned during our degrees in the real world without the restrictions of a university assignment.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

It is a good opportunity for practicing new ways of analysing, designing and communicating graphically. It will teach you a lot about your own capabilities and help develop your gut feeling of what is right and what is wrong when it comes to architecture. Furthermore it will help shape you has an architect.
